GILBERT BAKER

$14.00

Gilbert Baker was an openly gay man, artist, designer, and activist best known as the creator of the rainbow flag. The pride flag was created in 1978 when Baker hand-dyed and stitched together eight strips of vibrantly colored fabric. It is said that he was urged by Harvey Milk to create a symbol of pride for the gay community and he decided on the rainbow to reflect the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and spectrum of human sexuality and gender.

For New York City Pride in 1994, Baker created a mile-long rainbow flag that was carried down First Avenue in Manhattan.
