Stormé DeLarverie

from $4.00

Storme DeLarverie is an iconic gay rights activist. She is known as one of history’s most influential butch lesbians, drag kings and style icon. She was born in 1920 to an African American mother and white father. Prior to Stonewall, she was a groundbreaking drag king and performer and in the 1950s and 60s became known for being the only drag king in the Jewel Box Revue, NYC’s only racially inclusive drag group at the time. She also worked security at the neighborhood gay bars and became known as the Guardian of the Village for the way that she watched over queer young people in the area.

It is said that she resisted arrest and threw the first punch that ignited the Stonewall Riots.
